Nicki Minaj doesn’t deserve to win ‘Best New Artist’ at the Grammys because she’s not a New Artist. 

The rules for Best New Artist are odd and a bit confusing but there is a supped logic. It’s “for a new artist who releases, during eligibility year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist.” Since she’s had her first major label album out this year, plus radio singles, magazine covers, etc., she qualifies.

I don’t particularly care if she wins or not, but she qualifies based on the vague and vaguely ridiculous rules. (I ask the same thing about this category almost every year- “this artist qualifies?!” This year I didn’t understand how Bon Iver qualified since they’ve been around, but I guess they qualify since they were less indie this last year than in the years before, haha.)
