  • 1830: Future Mexican president Porfirio Díaz is born in Oaxaca.
  • 1835: The HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin, reaches the Galápagos Islands for the first time.
  • 1842: Honduran Gen. Francisco Morazán, a prominent Central American statesman, is executed by firing squad in San José, Costa Rica, at age 50.
  • 1914: Argentine writer Adolfo Bioy Casares is born in Buenos Aires.
