provocatoria:

chuckled at the fedora bit but whats wrong with white people and dreadlocks?

I’m going to try and compile some good sources for your reading and educating pleasure on this topic because there are a lot of other people who are better equipped to answer your question!

White People and Dreadlocks
Are Dreadlocks Really Cultural Appropriation?

DREADLOCKS, SEMIOTICS AND CULTURAL APPROPRIATION: An answer by Fuck Yeah Cultural Appropriation

To appropriate a hairstyle that is closely linked to black identity, empowerment and culture, and to be regarded as cool and hip for it while the people who wear locs rightfully are regularly stereotyped for the same hairstyle…is just unacceptable to me.

This is wonderful. White dreads just make me wanna vom. For me, when I was a kid and my classmates (almost all of whom were white) would say they “wanted my hair” and all I would say is “Great! Let’s trade! I’d love to give up the hours I have to sit and have my mom braid my hair!” Like, white people want the very hair they condemn and consider less beautiful- it makes no fucking sense. Can we just have our hair to ourselves and be proud of it- however we wear it- without white people fetishizing it?
