A while ago, I went out with someone who flipped the whole ally game on it’s head. Instead of theorizing allyship as something in which an Ally provides their privileged Ally Voice to the poor oppressed people…they thought of allyship in terms of privileged folks needing marginalized people’s voices so that they can understand the world better. Not in the sense that marginalized people are at the service of privileged populations, but that without our voices, privileged people are just lost ignoramuses who don’t know their dreadlocks from their war bonnets and need some damn guidance.
Just a thought, and also I like this quote and its implications.
